First New Pattern of 2012!

Sorry I've been a bit distracted! I thought I'd give you a little idea of what I have been up to.....

There are lot's of exciting things happening here trying to get ready for market and that takes a great deal of work!

The International Quilt Market isn't until May (thank goodness), but it takes several months of sleepless nights and lots and lots of revisions to get a pattern right, never mind 3!

That's what I'm aiming for at least...

Here's a little peek of the first that is nearly done....

Now, this isn't the final draft by any means.... some changes have been made since these sketches were done. I LOVE LOVE this pattern! Been wanting to do it for ever!

Once it's all completed, I'll have a drawing or two to get some of my new stash in your hands!

Got around to my Christmas Decorating this weekend. This is one of my favorite decorations from my parents home.

Vintage Christmas Elf. I love his rabbit fur lined vest and little elf booties! He has porcelain face and hands and painted fingernails!!!

Now I don't know about you, but that little detail is new to me :)

(didn't know elf's painted their fingernails red, did you?)

It's My Day!

And I'm totally exhausted from tying up loose ends for this pattern.

But it was all worth it- I think. I surely hope you like your FREE PDF Pattern, I had so much fun creating it, and I just LOVE how it turned out! But before I get to that, I need to do my shpeal.....:)-is that even a word? ... know what?......at 2am, it is!

Does your family have a favorite holiday tradition? We love to watch The Charlie Brown's Christmas special all cozy in our PJ's, and decorating the tree while listening to old Christmas music... you know like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby.
What's your favorite holiday movie? I'm with Jacquelynne Steves (the noble wife) on this one.... ELF! We probably watch it more than once during the month of December! My 5 yr. old has been saying,

"..... Son of a Nutcracker!"

since he could speak basically. Ok, maybe I shouldn't encourage..... but coming out of his little mouth, it makes us all laugh no matter what season it is!

Do you make many holiday presents? Last year I made quilted sun glass cases for all my girlfriends, Mother, Mother In-law. And I love making home made caramel apples all blinged out with edible glitter and yummy toppings! (My friend Kathleen and I do it on the side..... that's where my blog name came from ;)

Would you prefer a large fully decorated tree or one like Charlie Brown's tree? Can't I have one of each?

Do you like a big family gathering at the holidays or do you prefer a small dinner followed by hot chocolate by the fire? I love being just with my little family for Christmas eve, and Christmas morning, however, I come from a rather LARGE family (youngest of 9) so I really miss caroling with them and the annual Family Christmas Party, and seeing all the new babies and just really miss seeing the faces of the people I love so dearly. This time of year always seems to amplify that feeling, doesn't it?

Well, I'm off to Houston this up coming weekend for the International Quilt Market. I won't be exhibiting, but I will be walking the show visiting old friends, and passing out FREE QUILT PATTERNS for my new boy's collection SUNSET BEACH with Henry Glass Fabrics. So, if you are going to be there, stop me and grab one!

I will also be doing a CONTEST for all of you shop owners, and independent online stores who place an order for SUNSET BEACH, either with Henry Glass, or any major distributor ( Brewer, Checker, E.E. Schenck, Suziq). I'm still working on the prize but I think it will have something to do with sewing up a free sample of any of my patterns (of your choice) for you to display in your store along with your new fabric when it arrives! (because patterns help sell the fabric don't cha-know)! And for you online stores... maybe some free pattern packs, in place of a free sample- since you can't really display a sample online, unless of course that is what you still want;)

Anyhoo- here's what you need to do:

Ok so no big surprise, I'm a product of the 80's

I was in middle school in 1985 and being into clothes and fashion, I wore all the trendy styles of course... however I was always into taking something store bought and making it unique or different from my friends. There just weren't as many cool stores back then as there are today, so if you liked a shirt in Contempo Casual (for example), chances were someone else would be wearing it to school the next day as well!

Some of the trends of the 80's make me cringe to think about frankly ;) but hey, it is what it is and I must be true to my generation.

(Ok- I NEVER wore these let me just clarify) ha!

Madonna and Flash Dance influenced, Neon, cut up T-shirts, jelly shoes and bracelets, Swatch Watches and big lace bows in our hair were just some of the terrifying looks I adorned. Oh, and don't forget the Neon Blue mascara and matching eyeliner to boot! What a mess! Guh! (My poor Mother!)

Anyhow, fashion always circles back around and recently, I've found myself wearing cut up T's and neon accented parachute pants to workout in :). I catch my husband smiling and rolling his eyes as I walk out the door haha!

I purchased this book about a year ago, because I was tired of checking it out from the Library. I figure if I check a book out more than 2 times.... it's a keeper! And now there is a second one as well.

Anyhow there are lots of cool tutorials out there on this very subject, but I thought I'd show you this little Tutorial on how to cut your T-shirts from a girl on Youtube. You all know how much I LOVE youtube right?

Now in case you didn't know... I'm totally into Zumba Fitness (due to my High School years in South America- and my nieces Kass and Emily who are now Zumba instructors)! So here is a tutorial from Zumba so you can have super cute and edgy workout gear!

A new little project or two made with my Slice Fabrique!

I used my Urban Kid design card cartridge!
I LOVE to re-purpose stuff! This Swim Bag was made out of an old denim skirt I had in storage. I was going to donate it... but I couldn't get over all the great denim fabric I was going to give away.....
my boys needed another swim bag so that's what I made....

It's reversible.... (this side is more for me..:)

Denim is EVERYWHERE!!! Have you noticed?

(My sister made me one of these when I was 10 years old!)

think I still have it somewhere.....

guh!... cute!

I also used my Urban Kid lettering to make

a Monogram Pillow (made out of a shower curtain from Target!)

I love the waffle texture and the grommit pocket!

SuNSeT BEaCh - with Henry Glass

It's always a little distracting to see yourself being video taped! I don't know about you, but I have a tendency to pick myself apart!

......I shouldn't have worn that, guh! .....My hair! Oh why did I wear my hair like that? Do I really look like that when I talk? ha!

and it goes on and on....

And of course it doesn't help to hear your 5 yr. old say... "Is that you Mommy? You look weird."

Anyhow, here it is. Despite all my own criticisms, I am truly grateful to my friend, sweet Daria for featuring me on the Boutique Cafe giving me a chance to show you all my new boys collection Sunset Beach! It was going to debut in October at Quilt Market in Houston, but it has been pushed back a bit and will be hitting stores in March 2012. If you love hip, edgy boy surfer fabric with awesome colors, plaids and geometric prints perfect for your boys room etc.... please make sure you ask your favorite quilt shop for it!

I've been working on some girly outfits for my little great niece!

Yep! You heard right! GREAT NIECE! Guh! Suddenly I feel old!

Since I don't have a girl of my own, I get to use my need to be girly and create for others! Which I find very enjoyable actually. :)

The Slice Fabrique blog is featuring me this week! I got to make a little 4th of July outfit and something a little retro pink to showcase the more "girly" side of my design card called Urban Kid made exclusively for the Slice Fabrique!

1. First I ironed the fusible webbing to the back of my material.

2. Then I cut out all the shapes I wanted to use with my Slice Fabrique using my Urban Kid design card.

3. Next I ironed the shapes and lettering on to the onesie and stitched around it.

4. Then I sewed up a little 4th of July skirt to go with using my Pacific Trade Winds Fabric by Studio E!

2nd Project!

1. Then I wanted to do something a little retro girly :) Following the same steps as 1-4, I choose the scooter design, using the shadow shape available on my card out of one fabric, and the scooter shape out of another fabric to compliment.

2. Ironed it all down before completing the apron on my skirt,

3. Stitched around each cut, and after finishing the little skirt,..... whipped up a little peasant top to go with!

Guh! How cute is that?

But- before you go do all that... here is my Dragon Tail Tutorial... because

I promised my Nolan I'd make him one :)

I borrowed this great tutorial from

Stinkin CUTE!

But here's my rendition using the I-Top Button Toppers for the spots.

SUPPLIES:

1/2 to 3/4 yard main fabric-- I used Flannel

1/4 yard spike fabric

5" Velcro

Polyfil batting (small bag)

and.....

I-Top Tool & 1pkg. of Large Button Toppers & 1 pkg. of Medium Button Toppers

CUT LIST: MAIN FABRIC: tail: (cut 2): 22" x 11" waist straps: (cut 4): 12" x 3" circle: 7" in diameter (*I cut a 7" square, fold it in fourths, then cut the curve from fold to fold) CONTRASTING FABRIC: spikes (cut 2): 22" x 3.5"
I-Top Tool with Large and Medium Button Toppers for spots
Contrasting Fabric scraps (2"x 2") for each spot.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Trim tail pieces:
Taking your two strips 22" x 11", lay them face down. On one end you'll measure 4.5" from each side. The two inches left in the middle will be the tip of the tail. On the other end, you'll measure 4" along the sides as a marker. Connect these two markings to create a diagonal for the cone shape of the tail. Cut off the triangular sides and throw them away.

2. Make Spike Strip

NOTE: To make the spikes easier, you could cut 1 strip out of felt or fleece and just cut out a spike strip leaving the raw edges that won't fray, rather than sewing your spikes with 2 strips of fabric.

Take your two spike strips and lay them right sides together. Draw a row of triangles along the strip for the tail spikes. Begin at one end and work your way to the other, making the spikes shorter and narrower. I left about 1/2" between each spike.

3. Spikes:

Using machine, follow spike lines with needle pivoting at the corners by raising presser foot and turning fabric. Clip seam allowance to 1/4" and clip your top corners flat, clip in the valleys to help keep shape after you turn Right Side Out.

... like this. Now turn and press well.

Set aside while you work on your spots.

4. SPOTS:

Take I-Top Tool and Contrasting Fabric scraps.

Trim to about 1" around each Button Topper.

Fold fabric inside of Top half of Button Topper and drop into large rubber head.

With fabric all tucked in, place the back of the button on top of fabric,

Turn back (small side) of the I-Top Tool lining it up with the back of the button. Squeeze gently.

Peel rubber back and covered button should pop out!

Repeat for all SPOTS.

5. Spots to Tail:

Now you can decide where you want them placed on your Tail Pieces.

Sew onto Tail Pieces like you would a button, securing well. Once both sides are finished, you can take your SPIKES, and lay them Raw edges together, on top of the Right side of a Tail Piece with spikes pointing in towards center. Pin.

You can baste at 1/4".

6. Put Tail Together:

Next lay other Tail Side on top of spikes, Right Sides Facing!

Pin well. Decide where you want your opening for turning. I put mine on the opposite side of the Spikes. Stitch around both sides of Tail 1/2" seam allowance catching valley's of Spikes, (skipping those 4" to 5" for turning later) Leave Large end open.

7. Straps:

Take straps and lay them Right Sides Together. Stitch 1/4" around 3 edges leaving a short end open for turning. Clip corners and turn Right Side out and press.

Top stitch around all 3 edges.

Take Velcro strips and center on each Strap about 1" below closed short end. Pin and stitch around Velcro. (I do it a few times since they get a lot of tug and pull).

Next, Find the Center of your Tail by folding it in half and marking the center of each side with a pin. This is where you will put the waste straps.

This is very important!

* One strap must have Velcro face up, and the other side must have the Velcro against the inside side.

Stitch both straps on using a 1/4" seam allowance.

8. Closing Up Large End:

Take 7" circle and pin around opening at the large end- Right Sides Together.

Stitch around entire circle using 1/4" seam.

Turn Right side out through large side opening.

Stuff with Polyfill.

Pin opening together and stitch closed using a whip or ladder stitch.

Finally! It seems like it was FOREVER ago when I told you about some cool things happening with Making Memories! Finally, I can show you what I have been up to! I'm so excited to be a part of such a great company! The Slice Fabrique cuts awesome shapes out for you to applique on to FABRIC!

This little gadget is a hands free, cordless fabric cutting machine! It comes with some basic shapes and letters for you to use, but I have designed some super cool designs especially for your "URBAN KID". That is the name of my DS card! Here are some examples of the designs my specific URBAN KID card will have....

My URBAN KID card will include this free quilt project as well! I whipped this puppy out in like 2 days! Shipped if off to Slice for photographing..... nearly missed Fed-Ex 6pm cut off! GUH!

Again, my friend Mindy Johnston did the quilting (saved my backside by doing it on super short notice!) Thanks Mindy!

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! And, my card is not just for boys.... It's for all URBAN KIDS! Girls too! I just LOVE my cute little MUSHROOMS!

I made this for my soon to be born Great Niece Alexendria.... yep you heard right! GREAT NIECE! I have several actually..... suddenly, I feel quite old- but I digress.....

I'm a busy girl getting ready for market and all that THAT implies! (FREAKING OUT- and I'm not even doing a booth this go around but I'll be there!) New spring patterns are in the works *squeal! (more about that later....)

But I have been going a little crazy with the artwork that is hanging in my studio/front room. It's so old.... like almost 18 years old! See....

I love the frame still, but that picture has GOT to GO Pronto!!!

Anyhow, I don't have a lot of time, but had to do something!

So here's my super quick, framed fabric wall-art makeover tutorial....

On a side note.... I just had to snap a shot of my favorite piece of decor in my house.....

This wroughtiron lantern belonged to my parents. It hung in the house I was raised in, only, it had mossy green glass (which I would have kept, but a couple of the panes were broken and missing) Last year I brought it home from my parents garage. It was sitting in a box covered in other trinkets from my old home. For Mothers Day, I asked my husband to hang it for me in the front room.... that was all I wanted, so he did. :) After replacing the glass pieces, and purchasing some chain link to match, he got out his ladder and asked me to hold it while he hung. Wholly Crap!!!! It was not easy! This sucker weighs about 60 lbs! I'm not kidding! Do you have any idea how hard that is to hold above your head for an extended period of time in order to hang it from a vaulted ceiling????? He had to mount it into a stud in the ceiling for fear we might kill someone who stood in our doorway a little too long! But, I LOVE it!

The day I move.... it's comin with me!

So I'm going to confess a small obsession with this individual... Mandi, from Vintage Revivals. I think she is completely Fabulistic!

She is a chronic DIY'er which speaks straight to my inner veins because I love it when one can take a an idea and make them even better for half the cost. Mandi has an amazing flare and eye for style and I also love that about her. I want this bedroom..... for example!

She made the bed cover... which is so cute, but the whole room!!! aaah! Love it!

Since my blog pretty much reflects my boy side of Pacific Trade Winds fabric, I decided to show you the more "Girly" side of what I've been up to...

I actually made a quilt!

This is my first full sized quilt I've made EVER! I know... I should be ashamed, but in my defence, I have made several baby quilts!

I think it has always been a matter of time, or lack of it. But, this quilt went together soooo fast! I did the top in one Saturday!

I joined a quilt group (to broaden my skills) and after one meeting.... I was sooo jazzed to make one, I had to do one right then!

So, I chose this pattern from Abbey Lane Quilts, from their Fabulous 5 quilt pattern book - first, because I loved the pattern, and second, because it said it was a quick and easy quilt! Those ladies lived up to their word!

I'm kinda into the more "modern look" as far as quilts go. So that went into consideration when choosing a pattern as well.

I think it turned out great! And my friend and neighbor happens to have a long arm quilting machine in her basement so naturally I had to employ her! (I'm all about supporting young stay at home mommies!) Mindy Johnston did an amazing job!

This apple didn't fall far from the tree! Her mother owns the American Quilting store in Orem, Utah.

So if you are in the Denver Colorado area and need a quilt put together... she's your gal!

And here it is with some of the other patterns you can deck out your daughters room with.... because... I don't happen to have a daughter..... *sigh.

(Incidentally, I will have the Surf's Up Rug and Chill Sack that you see here, up for sale in my Etsy store soon, because.... what am I going to do with them..... really? ) So if you want them.... they are one of a kind samples! Or you can make your own! I also have the fabric up for sale there as well!

I'm keeping the quilt though :) Hey, I'm a girl! I can use a girly quilt in a world full of boy stuff!

Quilt Market 2010

So, The International Quilt Market was wonderful as usual, and lots of hard work.Over the next few days I will be announcing the Give Away winner! (I just have to Tally every ones entries up).

In the mean time, let me share some photo's with you. Every couple of years or so Free Spirit does something wonderful like bringing in the rock stars of design! If you weren't following me way back then, two years ago it was Jay McCaroll from Project Runway! Fabulous!

He is as cute in person as he is on TV girls! and... I must add, quite tall!

(I am wearing 5" clogs in this picture and he's still taller than I am! That was refreshing! ha!)

His fabric collection was super spa-like cool and had a great color pallet so fresh and earthy.

I've Been Sooo Busy!

So Here is a little sneak peek of my newest pattern! I've been very busy writing and sewing up samples and making changes etc! My fabric is due to show up any day! I've been trying to get everything done beforehand so when it does arrive, I can begin making Quilt Market Samples! I try and sew up my samples in something cute that I myself would want so that I can tell if I'm really going to like it or not.... I'll be putting some of those up for sale on my Etsy store if you want to get them! They will be one of a kind! So once they are gone... you'll just have to make up your own! :)

Ok, this pattern has been the DEATH of me! I don't know why, some patterns are just harder to work out all the kinks and such, but this one was a doozie for me! Anyhow, it is a "Scraps" pattern. You know... for all those little pieces of material that you just can't get rid of? But.... don't know what to do with?

The pencil bag can have a wristlet or not, can be patched together, or not. The Luggage Tags I just love! These were done in a more "boy" fabric... but I have a skull tag in some of my favorite TULA PINK fabric... and I LOVE IT! they will be on all my luggage when I come to Quilt Market in a few weeks!

Guuh! I need to get back to work!!!

You can say I'm a little slow sometimes.... out of touch, or maybe I'm just busy. (that's it! I'm really very busy!) But I'm finding it humorous that I'm just now being able to put two and two together, because I'm really quite good with faces.... (can't put the name to it most of the time... but faces I remember).
You've seen this video for Amazon Kindle right? Like a bazillion times..... like me, and every time, I kept saying.... boy she looks soooo familiar!!! But hey, I wrote it off..... because I watch Mad Men for example (have a small crush on the infamous Don Draper or Jon Hamm- yummy!) and this same pretty face was on Mad Men playing the oh so lucky stewardess who gets to kiss Don Draper.... so naturally, she would look familiar right?

(sooo jealous right about now!)

Or, how about here.... are we starting to see the resemblance here yet?

One would think....

I might have clued in here where it says her name..."Little", but being the blond I am, I kind of assumed the "Little" corresponded to the guy standing next to her since "Ashley" is a rather feminine name... after all. Right?

Nope.....

This is what it took.......

It took the face along side the name.....

we went to middle school together, Bryant Jr. High to be exact! Only, she went by Anne,

(not Annie) Duh! Hey, put a few years in between memories, have a few children in there (which will make anyone loose their mind in one way or another and one is bound to forget a face or two from your childhood.) Anyhow, I've been listening to her stuff now for a while, you can find it playing in my play list.... and she's just darling! Was back then, and still is now....

Here's the update on the Pink color way....

we took out the blue, added brown and I absolutely LOVE it!

I even got to throw a couple of my favorite prints back in-the tribal damask... YAY!

First strike off's came back and I was really pleased! A couple of changes in the Navy color way, and a couple of engraving issues (that's getting the lines all crisp and neat) but really, that was all!
Looking forward to getting some yardage!

I hate being interrupted once I've started something, stopping and starting over and over again dissrupts my creative flow, my chi if you will- which is why I usually choose to sew into the very late, or early hours of the morning, when It's quiet and I can focus.... (without having to rush a 3 yr. old to the potty because he's waited too long to make it in time by himself, for example).

Reciently, I've been choosing little projects, that are quick, gratifying, and FUN!

I needed a new travel and storage bag for my curlers, so I came up with this...

it fits 9 Large Velcro curlers and 6 small ones inside the bigger ones. Love IT!

Here's my version made out of Basic Grey-Moda

...it is lined with silk and has lots of little pockets

for all your rings, earrings,

and your bracelets go in the padded center.

Then you tie it all up and take it with you!

One perk of being in the Pattern business with my sister Lila, is I sometimes get to try out her patterns before anyone else does! A fresh pair of eyes can be helpful when writing patterns, and it also doesn't hurt to get the opinion of someone on a "different skill level" than you are. Lila is a fabulous sewer! My skills pale in comparison and I love to learn from her tips and techniques.

You know I love to see new creative minds at work!

Since I'm in the pattern business, I have to purchase barcodes for the back of my patterns. Now, I'm sure if you don't have your own product that you are trying to sell, you probably don't know anything about barcodes, nor care to know :). I know because I used to be just like you. I've never given a second thought to barcodes. However, since I am now in the market, and while surfing the web, I tripped accross these cool little designs for - you guessed it... barcodes! They are a little pricey for my needs, but aren't they cool?

hmmm, why haven't barcodes changed in hundreds of years of commerse? And, why didn't I think of it?
